The Essen artist Volker Ullenboom created these sculptures at the invitation of the Sahrbachtal Circle of Friends. He used an ax, chisel and mallet to transform the birch trunks provided, including the decommissioned Kirchsahr maypole, into figures with expressive faces. For nine years, a group of wooden men with carved character heads has surprised hikers near the wetland on the “Sahrbachweg”. They were carved out of birch trunks and set up by Volker Ullenboom as part of the “Artists discover the Sahrbachtal” project in 2010.
