The monastery was built in 1865-1869. It is a pilgrimage destination for many Orthodox Christians from the south of the island every Sunday. There are also pilgrim quarters for that.

Hiking
Pilgrims used to come here on donkeys. They then returned on foot as homage. The donkeys stayed behind and went wild.
Cats joined them. Both are fed. The donkeys prefer carrots and carob.
