• Little is known about the history of the building.
• It is believed that the previous building was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Eppstein.
• In 1490, a new castle was built on the same site – for unknown reasons – presumably by the Lords of Cleen.
• A few centuries later, the castle came into the possession of the von Fran(c)kenstein family, who also owned the Frankenstein Castle of the same name in Darmstadt.
• During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was besieged but not destroyed. Subsequently, the complex gradually fell into disrepair due to its insignificance.
• After the sale of the Franckenstein estate, the Franckenstein family withdrew to their estates in Ockstadt and the Wetterau region.
