At the crossroads near the Hahnenkamm road, hikers can take a break at the so-called "slate table".

From here you can walk left towards Lotharheil to the slate mine, which we can see in a valley bottom right.
The factory with the deep black-blue Silurian slate is the last of its kind in the Franconian Forest. Slate slabs of all kinds, slate clocks and slate jewelry are produced.According to tradition, the slate deposit was discovered by a forester and developed in 1856 by Reichsrat Frh. Lothar von Faber (Lotharheil), a descendant of the pencil manufacturer from Stein near Nuremberg. He founded a pencil factory in Geroldsgrün in 1859. His descendants still operate the large factory complex with the colorful paintwork today.

Beautiful forest trails lead all around the Hahnenkamm. Several seating options invite you to take a break along the way. Very close by is the slate mine Lotharheil, which is the last active mine in the Franconian Forest.
