In 1987, the ruins of a korokan, an old guest house for foreign diplomats, were discovered in Maizuru Park, which confirm the importance of Fukuoka as a port of entry to Japan in the Heian period (795-1185). Maizuru Park is also home to numerous sports facilities in the city and borders on Ohori Park in the west.
