This is the temple of the Tofukuji sect of Buddhism of the Rinzai school. It is also known as Banshosan. A Chinese merchant, Shakokumei (Xie Guo Ming), invited the famous priest Enni-Ben'en as the first priest and built this temple in 1242. The Buddhist statues from the Kamamura-Peiord and the copper bell from ancient Korea that housed the temple are considered important national possessions.

When an old ship was recovered from the Korean ocean floor in 1975, a wooden board named the temple was found and it was proven that the temple was engaged in overseas trade.

It was built in 1242 by Shoichi Kokushi. He is also said to have founded the well-known Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival. In the floor of the temple there is a slab on which it is stated that udon and soba noodles as well as manju bean paste buns were invented here, all of which go back to Shoichi Kokushi. The Buddhist statues from Kamamura Peiord and the copper bell from ancient Korea housed in the temple are designated as important national possessions.
