Dating back over 900 years, Carlisle Castle would once have been at the centre of various battles and invasion. It was constructed in a Norman style, complete with motte and bailey, under the orders of William II. During its fascinating history, the castle imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century, was besieged by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War, witnessed the Jacobite rising in 1745, and more.
You can visit the castle and Cumbria's Museum of Military Life which is located here. The castle is open 10am - 4pm on weekends. Tickets cost £7.50. More information: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/carlisle-castle
