The Baden connection to the Bottwartal Railway would have run via Knittlingen. While this railway project is not the only one in the former Kingdom of Württemberg that was begun and, despite being unfinished, could still be documented decades later in the towns and surrounding landscape, Knittlingen, with its station building that never saw a regular train, occupies a unique position in railway engineering in southwestern Germany, and probably even on the German mainland.

Very big train station in Knittlingen! The station building on Bahnhofstrasse, which has never seen a regular train, is probably unique in Germany. Even before the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the BER airport in Berlin-Schönefeld there were construction sites for the history books in Germany.

Around 1906 (provincial railway era) a standard-gauge railway line was planned from Bretten to Kürnbach through Knittlingen in Württemberg. The work came to a standstill due to the First World War and was resumed in 1919. The station was built from 1919-1920. However, the work was finally stopped because of more important projects of the Reichsbahn and the devaluation of the currency.
