From the Old Norse for ‘where wolves play’, hikes up Ullock Pike might not reveal anything resembling a wolf but you won’t mind, for the view and its surroundings more than make up for it. With a peak of 2,267 feet (691 m), the ridgeline offers such gobsmacking views that you might not realise you’ve reached the peak at all.

This fell isn’t usually climbed in isolation and instead is the first summit on the way to mighty Skiddaw. According to Wainwright, it’s the best approach and as soon as you’re on the ridge, you won’t disagree. If the weather turns on you or you don’t have the energy or time to go further, hiking to Ullock Pike is still a worthy goal.

Far reaching views on the shoulder of a giant

Hiking trails to Ullock Pike typically begin to the north west. From the A591 or the minor road to High Side House, you can hike on footpaths and bridleways to the ridgeline at Ling How. Alternatively, park at Dodd Wood where you’ll find public toilets and a cafe. From here you can easily enjoy a circular walk.

Hiking the ridge to Ullock Pike is a phenomenal affair on a well worn path. From the moment you gain any height, the valley below drops away and the sights get better. Reaching the summit, Bassenthwaite Lake dominates the western view with Derwent Water shining to the south and Dodd hill in the fore. Your view east is entirely of Longside Edge, Carl Side and Skiddaw herself, looming large.

Keswick makes an outstanding base for hiking in this area, with an abundance of accommodation, food and gear shop options to sate the appetite. With no technical sections, hike Ullock Pike throughout the year in good weather and attempt snowy ascents only with the right experience and equipment.

Best Hikes to Ullock Pike

Tips

  • A classic ridge often ignored due to its location in the far Northern region. However, it is only a couple of miles from Keswick and provides fantastic views of Bassenthwaite Lake, the fells surrounding Derwentwater and on a good day the sea and Scottish hills. A great path taking in several Wainwrights. Option to nip up Skiddaw, although it is at times a steep and slippy path.
