For centuries, the present-day cemetery chapel was the only parish church in Unterboihingen. Not only the villagers, but also worshippers from the surrounding area made pilgrimages to the church, which was originally called "Ad sanctum Columbanum im Hürnholtz" (To Saint Columban in the Hürnwood). The church was likely built before the year 1100, as evidenced by the foundations of the current tower. The first documented mention of the parish dates back to 1275. At that time, the church belonged to the Diocese of Constance and is mentioned in connection with the payment of a crusade tax.
