For centuries, the present-day cemetery chapel was the only parish church in Unterboihingen. Not only the villagers, but also believers from the surrounding area made pilgrimages to the church, which was originally called "Ad sanctum Columbanum im Hürnholz." The church was probably built before 1100. The foundations of the current tower at least suggest this. The first documented mention of the parish dates back to 1275. At that time, the church belonged to the Diocese of Constance and is mentioned in connection with the payment of a crusade tax.

It wasn't until the 15th century that a church was built in the center of Unterboihingen. A date around 1490 is suspected. The name St. Columban was transferred, and the old cemetery church has since been called the "Chapel of Our Lady in Hürnholz." Thanks to the murals discovered during renovations in 1971/72, it is not only a treasure of the city's art history; it continues to be used as a place for worship and prayer.
