Tilbury Fort, on the north bank of the River Thames, has protected London from seaward attackers since the 16th century. Henry III was the first to build a fort here to protect against French invaders. The fort you see today was built between 1670-84 and is hailed as the finest surviving example of 17th-century fortification in Britain. These days, you can explore the original guardhouse, chapel, gatehouse buildings, gunpowder magazines, Victorian underground passages, a museum, and more.
