Allan B

I got my first bike (a Raleigh Olympic 10 speed racer) when I was 10 and have loved cycling ever since. Over the following decades bikes have come and gone but there's always been something in the shed. My most recent acquisition is a Brompton, which I bought at retirement and I love it to bits because of its transportability. I've transported it in the car, the bus and the train to get me to destinations that are further afield. I'm not really interested in distance vs time, I'm just looking to get outside and see some lovely scenery and explore the Liverpool / Manchester area (and further afield) at a leisurely pace.

I also like to walk outdoors, which is a pastime that has evolved since doing the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme (Bronze, Silver & Gold) as a teenager. Although I can still push the occasional peaks & mountain trail, my preference is now the less strenuous heritage and themed trails that tend to be based around permanent or travelling exhibits in our towns, cities & surrounding woodlands.

Happy cycling & walking. Allan :-)

A stroll along Southports Lightport trail

Southport Lightport is a free interactive light and sound trail running along Lord Street, from 14 to 16 February 2026, located in four distinct zones from 5 pm to 9 pm. It was extremely busy and a bit chaotic at times.

Frodsham is a Market Town that dates from the 13th century and many of today’s buildings still stand on the original plots of land. Frodsham was an important port during the Middle Ages, and by the early 18th century a small shipbuilding yard was established. Later the River Weaver was widened to a canal, making it navigable up to Winsford where the Manchester Ship Canal was constructed.

Warrington is an industrial town in Cheshire, England which sits on the banks of the River Mersey and was historically part of Lancashire. Warrington was founded by the Romans as an important crossing place on the River Mersey, and by the Middle Ages it had emerged as a market town. The expansion and urbanisation of Warrington coincided with the Industrial Revolution, particularly after the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th century, as well as the constriction of the Manchester Ship canal and the Northern Railway infrastructure,

A trip to Manchester with a visit to Tattu restaurant, as a birthday treat, and the Pièce de résistance being the Moonewalkers exhibit at the Old MIF. The Moonwalkers tells the stories from the Apollo missions of the 1960s and ‘70s, and the 12 humans who have set foot on the moon, which I watched with amazement as a child.
