The Schlupkothen quarry is a 31 hectare nature reserve in Wülfrath. The limestone quarry was closed around 50 years ago and can now be discovered on a circular route. The former quarry, with its turquoise waters and high, overgrown rock faces, is a habitat for endangered animal species and at the same time a fascinating backdrop.

Cycling

The north of the district is characterized by the renatured Schlupkothen quarry, where more than 45 million tons of limestone were mined from 1898 to 1960. The 33.37 hectare water-filled quarry, which has been surrounded by a circular hiking trail with viewing platforms since 2003, has been designated as a nature reserve since 1984 because of its special importance as a reptile and amphibian area. However, the protection ends automatically if the limestone quarry is used again.
