The four seasons are represented several times in the sculpture at Versailles. The Grande Commissions brings together a series of sculptures commissioned by Louis XIV in 1674, in which statues of the seasons appear.

The Royal Avenue constitutes the major east-west axis of the garden. It was designed from the first garden of the time of Louis XIII. At the beginning, it is an alley about fifteen meters wide, with a steep slope, leading to a pool dug at the beginning of the 1660s: the Eau des Cygnes room, future Apollo pool. Around 1665, the alley was widened (today it measures around 45 meters wide) and its slope was considerably softened. Under Louis XVI, a row of chestnut trees was added to its border of yews and hornbeams. On the side of the Latona amphitheater, the entrance to the alley is marked by two admirable groups by the sculptor Puget that Louis Andromeda (1684). Today they are casts, the originals being kept in the Louvre.

This pool, called Autumn, is the equal of the three other pools dedicated to the seasons located near the Allée royale. Bacchus, a figure from Roman mythology, teaches vine cultivation throughout the world. God of wine and intoxication, he symbolizes the harvest time. He is surrounded by little satyrs, half children, half goats.
