"In the middle of the metropolitan area, in the south of the city of Essen, lies the Heisinger Aue - a protected area with European significance.
This floodplain of the Ruhr includes valuable floodplain forest, wet grassland, old water bodies and small ponds that were created by mountain subsidence. When the river overflows its banks in autumn and spring and floods parts of the floodplain, the area is a resting place and feeding place for numerous migratory birds. In summer, when the meadows and pastures are rarely flooded, the grassland areas are illuminated by a sea of colorful flowers. Numerous insects and amphibians find an ideal habitat here. Thanks to extensive farming, up to 70 species of birds raise their brood in the floodplain.
Several hiking routes take visitors through the area to various observation points. The “Rote Mühle” inn invites you to refresh yourself after visiting the Aue. Lake Baldeney is just a few steps away. This is where the “Heisinger Bogen” bird sanctuary is located, which is home to a colony of gray herons and grebes.

In the south of the city of Essen - lies the Heisinger Aue, a river floodplain of the Ruhr with valuable riparian forest, old water bodies with reeds and small ponds. The large wet meadows are regularly flooded. This provides relief during floods and promotes the self-cleaning power of the Ruhr.
In 1989, the 150 hectare area was protected as a refuge for many species and an important wintering and resting place for migratory birds.
Many birds can be observed here at any time of the year. A walk along the Ruhr is always worth it.

A beautiful bird sanctuary where many water birds have their breeding grounds.
Because of the "migration of peoples", you should avoid weekend visits if you want to observe something, because the path between Essen Steele, Heisingen and Baldeneysee is not particularly wide (approx. 2 m) and is also extremely popular with cyclists.
Especially when knotweed, stinging nettles, etc. get bigger, you hardly have any alternative options.
