    Salzburg Main Station

Salzburg Main Station is an important arrival point in the city of Mozart: even those arriving by plane usually reach the city center via the station. Most individual travelers, however, arrive in Salzburg by car or train, the latter almost inevitably via the station. This is located in the northern part of the city. Many of the important bus lines stop here, both city buses and intercity buses that connect Salzburg with other regions in Austria and the surrounding communities. In addition, you will also find a large taxi stand at the station.

Other facilities at the station that may be useful for tourists: an ATM, lockers with very cool digital control, fast food restaurants, a hairdresser, and a tourist information office. And of course toilets, although unlike those on the trains, these are not free.

The main station is within relative walking distance of the old town: without luggage, you can get there in about 15 to 20 minutes. With luggage, you can still choose between taxi and bus. For details on the latter, please read our article on public transport in Salzburg. Buses to the surrounding area of the city and to Bavaria are operated from their own bus station and also look different than the city buses that run on overhead lines.

History & future of Salzburg's main station

The main station was opened in 1860, which is actually quite late considering the size of Salzburg. In the first half of the 19th century, however, the city went through very difficult economic times and the expansion of the railway network made slow progress throughout the Habsburg Empire. After 1860, however, the station steadily gained in importance.

In the Second World War, the station, as well as the entire surrounding area, was badly bombed and badly damaged. A provisional reconstruction followed. This provisional structure was maintained for decades: corrugated iron roofs, a patchwork of asphalt and rusting steel beams. The reason for this was that no agreement could be reached on a new building. ÖBB, Salzburg politicians and citizen groups argued about which parts of the station were worth protecting and which should be completely rebuilt.

The Südtirolerplatz in front of the station has since been renovated and an underground regional station was completed in 1996. The reconstruction of the station only began in 2009, and the renovation was completed in 2010 with a de facto new building in the historic facade. In the years before that, new office buildings and a shopping center were built near the station.

Compared to the situation in the 1990s (not to mention the time before), the station area has improved dramatically. However, you will still find plenty of bums there, and pickpockets also cause trouble here in the high season. Nevertheless, the station is becoming increasingly less unattractive.

If you come to Salzburg by train, you enter historical terrain with the first step. The opening of the Salzburg train station in 1860 meant for the secluded crown land the connection to the world. Salzburg Central Station is just a 15-minute walk from Salzburg's Old Town. Even shorter is the distance to Mirabell garden, to the Andräviertel with the numerous coffee houses or to the Salzach.

The station forecourt was redesigned in 1996. In the immediate vicinity of the main station is the large shopping center Forum1 with numerous shops, restaurants and a large food market.
