There has been a church in the Beketal for more than 400 years. The first chapel was built in 1520 - a rather small place of worship in a half-timbered construction. In 1669, the Paderborn prince-bishop Ferdinand I von Fürstenberg had the dilapidated half-timbered chapel of St. Crucis demolished and replaced by the massive cruciform chapel, which presumably also served as a pilgrimage church. This church, which is now known to the people of Altenbeken as the "Old Church" on the viaduct, was consecrated over 350 years ago and expanded in the 19th century.
