Eisfeld had its first railway connection in 1858 with the Werra Railway heading west to Eisenach and south to Coburg. The connection to Coburg was discontinued in 1945 and was later dismantled. As a second railway line, the narrow-gauge line to Schönbrunn was opened in 1890 to open up the northern hinterland. This was also dismantled in 1974. Finally, the Eisfeld – Sonneberg railway line was opened in 1909 and is still in operation today (Wikipedia).

Eisfeld train station is at km 108.3 from Eisenach. The main route once continued via Coburg (km 130.1) to Lichtenfels (km 150.9) where the end of the Werra Railway from Eisenach was. After the Second World War, the route was interrupted by the Iron Curtain. The 21 km long section with the Tiefenlauter and Görsdorf stations was shut down and dismantled. Since then, Eisfeld has only been an on-the-go station between Sonneberg and Meiningen.
