The William Clough path is named after a cutler who worked here. Look for signs of iron smelting underfoot. During the 1932 mass trespass, the ramblers left the path which was originally higher up the slope and became embroiled in scuffles with gamekeepers and water bailiffs.

Take care in the wet season and bring good, waterproof boots. The path itself becomes very waterlogged and the rainwater runoff runs down the walking route.

This is the busiest path I’ve ever experienced in the UK - literally hundreds of people coming up on a good day. Reminds me of the cables of Half Dome, it was that busy. And it’s not easy going; I’d guess a lot of those heading up didn’t make it on to Kinder!
