The square was built in the 13th century and is the most important political-economic center of the city. The enormous mass of the Palazzo Pubblico, traditionally called Gothic, dominates it.
Opposite the Gothic palace is the Governor's Palace, built in 1787 to a design by the talented Piacenza architect Lotario Tomba.
On the sides of the square, which was repaved in the last decade of the eighteenth century, are two bronze equestrian statues of the Dukes of Farnese, commissioned by the community of Piacenza to Francesco Mochi di Montevarchi.
