Although it is now in ruins, one can get an impression of its former importance: In contrast to other castles in the Rhein-Erft district, the Lechenich Landesburg was not the seat of an aristocratic family, but served Cologne's archbishops as a residence, administrative and court seat. Built between 1306 and 1360, it was one of the most powerful castles in the Rhineland, along with the hilltop castle Nideggen. Later only the outer bailey remained for the administration and court of the Lechenich Office. The Berlin banker von Bleichröder had it converted into a comfortable mansion in 1895 and also enlarged the palace gardens.
