Swimming with a view of the royal palaces - a good cooling even in midsummer!

Please do not ride on the south and southwest side by bike, because that is a pure walk and also on the SW and west side very narrow. It really bothers you, unless you are very early or very late.

The Alpsee is unique in terms of its panorama, surrounded by mountains and you can easily walk around it in about 1.5 hours. At the bottom is the Marian monument and you have a great view of the two castles.
Dog owners should be aware that when walking around you also have to cross some gratings which cannot be avoided.

To experience the lake touristy quiet, not on weekends and public holidays, as well as in the main holiday periods. A circumnavigation on foot is definitely recommended.

Deep turquoise blue, the Alpsee blinks in the depth while you pedal up the forest, wonderful. At the bottom of the car park, where the tourists park to get to the castle, it gets very crowded. Like a culture shock after the quiet nature experience before!

The 60 meter deep lake with a circumference of about 5 kilometers lies in the middle of a picture book landscape. The Alpsee can be circumnavigated (on foot). The 3.9 km long Alpsee circular route begins in Hohenschwangau directly below the royal palaces and runs mainly in the shade. On the south bank of the lake is the Alpseebad, which is easily accessible by bike and equipped with a sunbathing lawn and kiosk. It offers the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear water of the lake.

After two, more demanding ascents and descents, you come to the end / beginning of the Alpsee, right under the Hohenschwangau Castle. Here are other sights, as well as the 2nd, world-famous castle, Neuschwanstein. Many of the highlights of the Allgäu are located here.

The Alpsee is beautiful and walking around it is a great hike. It's not particularly difficult but you should wear decent trainers. Views of the castles are guaranteed and the water is Caribbean blue in some places!

The Alpsee is an 88 hectare lake in Bavaria in the Ostallgäu district. It has a circumference of 4.70 km and belongs to the municipality of Schwangau and is located in the immediate vicinity of the royal castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, directly at the foot of the Säuling mountain. The town of Füssen is two kilometers northwest of the lake, and the border with Austria is 450 meters further south. The smaller Schwansee is 400 meters north of the lake.

The formation of the Alpsee's hollow shape in the mountains is explained as the leaching of the easily weatherable "Raibler gypsum" (Alpsee fault) that occurs extensively there; the water of the Alpsee feeds the springs of the Schwansee through the mountains. The lake is surrounded by rounded forest mountains with glacial polish that were shaped by the ice age, such as the Schwarzenberg and the Kitzberg with a karstified plateau.

The lake is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Germany and is used as a bathing lake in the summer in a bathing establishment created specifically for this purpose (Alpseebad, on the south bank). There is also a boathouse where pedal boats and rowing boats can be rented. When it is cold enough, the lake is also used for ice skating in winter.

The lake is located in the landscape conservation area for the protection of parts of the landscape in the Faulenbach Valley, the Lech Valley, the Schwansee Valley and the Alpsee area in the Füssen district.

The lake is owned by the Free State of Bavaria, and the Wittelsbacher Compensation Fund is the tenant of the lake.

The Museum of the Bavarian Kings, which opened at the end of 2011, is located directly on the Alpsee.
