My hike finally went through this wildly populated area. It started behind the tunnel to San Augustin. The path went along the rain drainage point and the fenced area. In between there were tents, huts made of cardboard and panels. And garbage everywhere. It was awful walking here.

We had the same experience. The area by the watercourse (mostly dry) is inhabited by homeless people, perhaps even dropouts, who camp here in the wild and have built shelters from all kinds of suitable building materials. The rubbish here is a problem, but none of the residents seem to mind. It feels a bit like a slum. In our experience, the residents here are peaceful, show you the way and are happy not to be bothered themselves. Since you are in a fenced-in area, we had a slightly uneasy feeling walking through. Not everyone's cup of tea.
