Mull’s Ben More (not to be confused with Ben More near Crianlarich) is a graceful rocky giant, a mountain held in such high regard that many baggers choose it as their final Munro. There is something magical about expeditions on Scotland’s islands and hikes to Ben More rank amongst the finest.

A fair deal of effort is required just to reach its slopes. Unlike on Skye, there is no bridge connecting Mull to the mainland. Once your ferry docks at Craignure or Tobermory, you’ve still got a reasonable drive or bus ride to the shores of Loch na Keal where most walking routes to Ben More begin.

A grand and graceful yet remote island Munro

You can find an exciting (but technically straightforward) scramble by ascending to the bealach south of Beinn Fhada. From here a steep and spectacular ridge leads over A’ Chìoch before continuing to the summit of Ben More. A more dignified ascent, where your hands won’t be called upon so much, up Ben More’s north western ridge is also popular.

As the highest point for many miles around, the view from the summit is predictably awesome. The Isle of Mull splays out in all directions and the smaller isle of Tiree, Coll and Ulva float on the shimmering sea. To the north, beyond the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, are the mountainous islands of Rum and Eigg. The great, undulating horseshoe of the Ben Cruachan group is particularly distinctive on the mainland.

The small village of Salen is the closest base for accommodation, nestled on the shores of the Sound of Mull. Slightly further north is Tobermory and its colourful harbour, the main town on the island.

    Hiking

The only Munro on Mull, and a great view.

    Hiking

Awesome view to the Ardnamurchan peninsula and the islands of Eorsa and Ulva in Loch na Keal. Munro giants (Ben Nevis and co) on the mainland can be seen to the north-east. This is Mull's only Munro and it was actually my first ever Munro. It also makes for a great 'final Munro' due to the novelty/fun of the ferry journey over and the relative ease of the walk in comparison to other Munros.

High point on the Isle of Mull, Ben More is a Munro commonly left until last due to its location – and what a way to become a 282 completer. It is a first-rate, graceful mountain with eye-watering coastal views, an interesting eastern ridge, and spectacular wildlife including sea eagles.
