Portugalete is connected via the world's oldest transporter bridge, the Puente de Vizcaya built in 1893 by Alberto de Palacio y Elissague, to the opposite district of Las Arenas in Getxo. Since 2006, the ferry has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Actually Puente transborador the bridge is probably unique. 1893 built in the original form. 1989 some things were renewed. On the cabin now made of fiberglass ropes hanging on a bridge construction spanning the Rio Nervion at a height of more than 50 meters. World Heritage since 2006.
