The Elbe Lateral Canal branches off between Braunschweig and Wolfsburg near the town of Edesbüttel from the apex of the Mittelland Canal (MLK-km 233.6, ESK-km 0.0), leads north over the Allertal through the Lüneburg Heath and flows into Artlenburg into the Elbe (Geesthacht barrage). With this powerful canal, the seaports of Hamburg and Lübeck are reliably connected to the network of inland waterways.
