The Eppinger lines were a fortified line of defense that extended from Weißenstein near Pforzheim via Mühlacker, Sternenfels, Eppingen to Neckargemünd. It had a total length of 86 kilometers. It was supposed to prevent French raids in the Palatinate War of Succession (1688-1697). Chartaquen (watchtowers) have been built at the following locations: near Niefern-Öschelbronn, near Schönenberg on the Sauberg and those near Eppingen. All are nice destinations for bike rides.

Beautiful reconstructed watchtower from the years 1695 to 1697. The Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden had the Epping lines in Fronarbeit create. The defensive position around Eppingen were intended to fend off strong opponents.

Very nice view of the Kraichgau. One or two trees cloud the view a bit, but from here you still have a beautiful view of the Ravensburg and the Steinsberg.
