Cook's Cottage is Melbourne's only 18th-century building. It was originally built in Yorkshire (England) in 1755. In 1933 it was dismantled and transported to Australia. It reminds many people of the discoverer of Australia's east coast, James Cook, who never set foot in Melbourne and Victoria. Cook's Cottage was built and later owned by his parents. Captain Cook himself probably never entered the house. A period cottage garden surrounds the house and the Union Jack flies on the flagstaff, under which Cook sailed and claimed Australia's East for Britain. The cottage is located in the romantic Fitzroy Gardens, which was laid out in 1848 on 26 hectares and is regularly visited by numerous wedding parties on Saturdays for photo shoots.
