The patronage "Maria (or in other spelling: Mariae) Visitation" of the Impekoven church refers to one of the many commemoration days or festivals in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. The term "visiting" in the Bible - which is negatively tainted in today's way of expression or thinking - means Mary's visit to her relative Elizabeth.
She is married to Zacharias and the marriage remained childless, which was a social flaw at the time. Despite her old age, she was still pregnant, which the Archangel Gabriel told Maria when he brought her the message that she herself should give birth to Jesus, the Son of God.
The son of Elizabeth and Zechariah is John, nicknamed "the Baptist", who is considered the forerunner / pioneer of Jesus Christ.

Whether you find the concrete walls, a special characteristic of the architect G. Böhm, beautiful or not, is of course a matter of taste. In any case, the colored Stations of the Cross, enamel pictures by the artist Egino Weinert, spoke to me personally inside the church.

In Roman times, the eastern slope along the foothills was already settled - the Bonn legionary camp was not far away - and the native population had adopted Christianity early on. The proximity to Bonn certainly had a major influence on this.

The area around Impekoven was characterized by arable farming, but the slopes were used because of the higher yields for viticulture, which was safely introduced into this region by the Romans.

The current church building is already the third church in Impekoven. A neo-Gothic chapel at the same level for 83 years, built in 1884, expanded in 1926 and demolished in 1967 because it had become too small for the rapidly growing community. A necessary expansion with simultaneous renovation was not economically justifiable.

The first church, probably a half-timbered chapel, stood at the beginning of Steingasse, first mentioned in 1826, demolished in 1889. According to tradition, it is said to have been in place as early as 1650.

The foundation stone of today's "concrete church" was laid on July 14, 1968, when the shell was already finished. This church was designed by Prof. Dr. Gottfried Böhm as a »crystal clear monolith«, that is, as a building made of one piece, comparable to a rock crystal. Many church visitors also see the design as a "castle of God" or the "tent of God".
