The "Totenkeller" (Death Cellar) in the Harburg Mountains is not a real grave, but the ruin of a former storage or ice cellar built deep into the earth centuries ago. The gloomy place got its eerie name in popular parlance through old robber stories and because the vaults served the population as a temporary hiding place in times of war. Today, the cellar, which is at risk of collapse, has been largely filled in or secured for safety reasons, which is why mostly only inconspicuous depressions and remains of walls can be found in the forest.
