The Upper Gate was built in 1792 under Prince Ludwig Friedrich Karl of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein-Öhringen by Johann Wilhelm Glenck and Johann Georg Glenck.
The panels on the east side show the prince's initials as well as the motto and the large princely coat of arms of the main Hohenlohe-Neuenstein line. The iron gate wings were removed in 1835, the pedestrian passages date from 1955 and thus from the time when traffic was still directed through the city center and the Upper Gate. The gate, designed in the classicist style, was built on the spot where a so-called Upper Gate Tower from the Staufer period once stood. Today the building is located in the traffic-calmed area of the city center. It was completely renovated in 1991 together with the functional bells.
It connects the small, medieval city center with the spaciously designed Karlsvorstadt of the 18th century.
