It is the northern of two natural harbors of Valletta. From here, ferries leave for Valletta and Gozo. There is also a large sheltered marina there. In the middle is the small island of Manoel Island.

The name component "Marsa" comes from Arabic and means harbor and is encountered not only in many places in Malta, but also e.g. in Tunisia, Egypt and in many formerly Arab areas, including in the name of the French city Marseille.
"Marsamxett" [mɐr.sɐmˈʃɛt] originated from "Marsa-muscetto" and could mean "harbor of muskets" and be an indication that these firearms were landed here in the past, as a production of these weapons, common for foot soldiers since the end of the 16th century, was not possible on the resource-poor Maltese archipelago.
