Colorful half-timbered houses, historic steamships and wonderful panoramic views of the Elbe await you in the shipping town of Lauenburg / Elbe.
The southernmost city of Schleswig-Holstein is located in the border triangle of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.
Located directly on the bank and on the slopes of the Elbe, historical half-timbered houses are lined up in the Elbstraße. With the many lovingly renovated houses, the old town of Lauenburg is the largest monument ensemble in all of Schleswig-Holstein.
History comes to life on a walk over the old cobblestones of the shipping town. Numerous small streets and stairs connect the old town with the upper town. The castle located there with the castle tower and princely garden is reminiscent of the times of the Askan dukes.
The Elbe has shaped the history of the city. And the shipping itself can still be experienced in Lauenburg. Modern passenger ships and historic steamships invite you to tours on the Elbe, the Elbe-Lübeck Canal or the Elbe Side Canal. Near the waterways, the long-distance cycle routes “Elberadweg”, “Alte Salzstraße”, “Hamburg-Rügen” and the “Iron Curtain Trail” also cross in Lauenburg and offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the area by bike.

The lower town of the old boat town of Lauenburg is worth a visit. The lower town is endangered by every mighty Elbe flood. The water levels are marked at one point. The last floods were a disaster for every owner. People who had just renovated had to start all over again.
The lower town is home to many artisans and many bars. There's a lot to discover.

It is also worth taking a long walk along the Elbe to the former match factory (now a youth hostel), the winter pictures come from there (05.02.2012). The way back takes you through the old town or vice versa. Those who dare go up from the lower town to the castle. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view above.

Lauenburg is home port of steam-powered paddle steamer Kaiser-Wilhelm.

The best view of Lauenburg is from Hohnstorf.

Lauenburg is just beautiful with its old town center. Cycling is sometimes a bit of a hassle due to the many cobblestone streets - but what you see pays for the effort ...

Elbstraße in the center of the historic old town is Lauenburg's oldest street. Picturesque half-timbered houses from the 16th-19th Century testify to the then flourishing business life. The "Elbschiffahrtsmuseum" and the "Alte Kaufmannshaus" are located on Elbstraße.

The Mensingsche Haus was named after the original owner. There are documents documenting an edification in 1573. For a long time a barber was active here. This is the old job title of a barber. The lovingly restored and decorated framework and the location in the heart of the Lauenburg old town make the house a popular photo opportunity. This was already the case at the turn of the century when the Elbe flood reached its previously documented high. Also from this time there are photos. Today, here is an ice cream parlor, which provides in the summer months for a popular cooling off during sightseeing.

Lauenburg is really beautiful. The Elbschiffahrtsmuseum - herzogtum-lauenburg.de/a-elbschifffahrtsmuseum - I would particularly like to recommend.

Perfect to stop off a bike ride or hikes. There are many cafes right on the waterfront in the old town, perfect when the sun is shining. The old town has been preserved in an incredibly great condition.

While strolling through the old town of Lauenburg you will discover cozy restaurants, small shops and workshops of artisans. Due to Lauenburg's hillside, an upper and a lower town were created. Numerous alleys and stairs connect both districts and offer great views and views.
The center of the old town is Elbstraße, the oldest street in Lauenburg. Business flourished here. Particularly worth seeing are the Maria Magdalenen church from 1227, the Mensingsche house (Lauenburg's oldest house from 1573) and the "old merchant house.
Colorful half-timbered houses, historic steamships and wonderful views of the Elbe await you in the shipping town of Lauenburg.
Where one of the largest transshipment points in Northern Europe used to be, today excursion boats moor regularly. A special experience is a trip on the steam ships "Kaiser Wilhelm" and "Elbe", which are over 100 years old. You can find out how life and work on board used to be in the Elbe Shipping Museum.

The road leads through the picturesque old town of Lauenburg. However, the cobblestones for cyclists a Rüttelstrecke (there is no alternative)!

As an end point, as a stopover with break the Lower Town offers a charming resting place. However, was upwards, must be prepared for steeply rising paths.

The historic old town of Lauenburg actually consists of only one street, that is the Elbstrasse. From the Hitzler shipyard to the former match factory, now a youth hostel.
A walk through the street is always worthwhile and you can also go back the route directly on the Elbe.

Lauenburg trumps with a picturesque old town. An ideal start and stage ride for a bike tour on the Elbe. The Elbe Cycle Path leads directly through the old town. Do not get lost on the way to Hamburg, it could be adventurous.
