The Hilpoltstein lock was built between October 1983 and April 1989 as part of the construction of the Main-Danube Canal federal waterway. It is designed as a savings lock with three savings basins south of the lock basin and is the northern limit of the canal's apex. The upper water is 406 m above sea level. NN, the underwater level of the lock is 381 m above sea level. NN. As with the locks in Eckersmühlen and Leerstetten, the lock drop height is 24.67 meters and is therefore the highest drop height that has been built in Germany to date.

The Hilpoltstein power plant of the Bavarian State Power Plants has been in operation at the lock since 1993 and is part of the Danube-Main transfer. The hydroelectric power plant recovers energy from the transfer water pumped over the headwater using a Francis turbine with an output of 3000 kW. On average, 5.4 million kWh per year can be fed into the regional power grid.

Further power plants on the northern ramp of the transfer are located in the inflow and outflow of Lake Rothsee, at the Leerstetten lock and the outlet of the Main-Danube Canal into the Schwarzach near Wendelstein.

Good possibility of crossing the canal at the lock; if you're lucky, a ship is approaching.
