The magnificent building by Johann Dientzenhofer is not only the most famous landmark of the baroque city, he is also the most important baroque church in Hesse. Since the elevation of the Fulda abbey to the prince-bishopric in 1752, the church has been a cathedral and therefore a bishop's church. Previously, it was monastery or collegiate church of 744 founded on behalf of St. Boniface monastery Fulda. His bones were buried at the wish of the saint in the western crypt of the monastery church. To this day, his grave is a destination for pilgrims and tourists from near and far.
