Just like here on the Kreuzberg from Westerstetten, the Way of the Cross usually leads up the mountain or hill with the - nowadays usually 14 - stations (sometimes called "Calverienberg" in memory of Golgotha, where Jesus Christ was crucified) or along these. Early medieval forerunners of the Stations of the Cross had only 7 stations and were sometimes also referred to as the "Walk to the Seven Footfalls".
In some areas of Germany, after the XIV. Station, the Entombment of Jesus, another station follows: The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This additional Stations of the Cross extends the view of the Easter hope perspective: Overcoming death and suffering.
