The memorial stone commemorates an episode from the Napoleonic Wars. After the then Prussian fortress of Küstrin was surrendered to the French without a fight by its commander, Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von Ingersleben (1746-1807?) on November 1, 1806, the Prussian garrison was taken prisoner by the French. Many of the soldiers managed to evade capture.

In the following weeks and months, numerous Prussian soldiers were captured by the French and imprisoned in the fortress of Küstrin. Declared "guerrillas" by the French, the French fortress commander, d'Agould, had several Prussian soldiers summarily executed on the "Gohrin" ravelin of the fortress of Küstrin on February 21 and April 20, 1807.

I have not been able to determine how many soldiers were executed at that time. However, it must have been a larger group, since they were later commemorated with this memorial. After 1945, the memorial was located in the restricted area of the Oderinsel (Oder Island) garrison of Soviet/Russian troops in the former GDR and could only be restored after their withdrawal.
