In June 2009, the Wadden Sea was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This puts the entire Wadden Sea on a par with other world famous natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon in the US and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The Wadden Sea World Heritage Site covers an area of about 11,500 square kilometers along the coastline with a length of about 500 kilometers. The Wadden Sea itself has been under protection for more than a generation. So far, the Wadden Sea was designated as a national park.

The Cuxhaven coastal heath developed into a new tourist attraction in recent years. It extends in the vicinity of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site from Cuxhaven-Duhnen, Holte-Spangen via Berensch-Arensch to Oxstedt. On the Geest extensive heaths of crowberry, broom heath, sandy grasslands, moorland and crooked forests were preserved.
