The church and the complex of the former Cistercian monastery were built in the 13th century. After the Reformation, the monastery was abandoned and the church remained unused for around 200 years before it was consecrated again as a village church in the 18th century.

The monastery Altfriedland with surrounding lakes is worth seeing. Ideal starting point for bird watching. The Klostersee is good for swimming in summer.
