Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary Gungolding

The church is of medieval origin; The basement of the tower with a Gothic pointed arched window on the east side and the cemetery walling in the traditional quarry stone walling technique still bear witness to this today. In 1740, the nave was extended to the west, raised and redesigned in a Baroque style, and the octagonal upper floor of the tower was built according to the plans of the Eichstätter court building director Gabriel de Gabrieli.

The bright interior was adorned by Eichstätt artists in 1740/41: Franz Xaver Horneis created the banded ceiling and pulpit, the paintings on the ceiling of the nave (Assumption of Mary in Heaven) and the choir (Coronation of the Virgin) and on the gallery balustrade were made by Joseph Dietrich. The high altar was also executed by Eichstätter masters in 1742, but late Gothic sculptures were put up again: in the middle a figure of Mary (around 1470) and above the side passages St. Barbara (right) and St. Katharina (left); Both side figures belonged to a late Gothic shrine altar (around 1500) together with St. Margareta (on the right nave wall at the back). A wooden figure of Christ Salvator (in the middle of the right nave wall) also dates from this period.
