Former river bed of the Neckar. A small pond has formed at this point. Paradise for aquatic animals. Even a gray heron was seen and photographed. Image is uploaded.

Today the Scheidgraben runs through the Ried – formerly the river bed of the Ur-Neckar. Even in Roman times, the great river Neckar was found here on its way to the Rhine. Today, numerous nature reserves (often wetlands with swamps and reeds, sometimes wet meadows) in the Ried bear witness to the former courses of the river.

The old Neckar bed is located in today's northern Upper Rhine Graben in Ried in Hesse. Since the middle Eocene period, i.e. beginning around 45 million years ago, the earth’s crust has been sinking here and a completely new landscape has emerged, as sedimentary rocks from the surrounding area fill up this 310 km long and up to 40 km wide natural depression .
This subsidence of the earth's crust continues to this day. In some places, the earth's crust has dropped by up to 3500 meters. Until about 2000 years ago, the Neckar flowed through a meadow landscape with a tangle of meanders, loops, oxbow lakes and silted-up arms, along the foot of the Odenwald. The Ur-Neckar adapted its river bed to the constantly changing landscape and also flows through it (in addition to the silting up)
today at Mannheim in the Rhine and not as before at Trebur.
