A water mill with a dam has stood at this junction since 1724.
This is the third location of the Vechta water mill.
In the Middle Ages, this originally stood as a stately mill on the branch of the Moorbach, which was specially built for the
Vechta Castle, in the town near the Nepomuk Bridge
(today's street: An der Propstei, formerly Mühlenstraße).
The Nepomuk Bridge is named after the statue that stands on the western bridge wall. This shows St. John of Nepomuk (around 1350 to 1393), who died as a martyr in Prague and was chosen by the town of Vechta as the bridge saint and patron saint of merchants. In the 17th century, the water mill was moved west towards the citadel for a short time. However, it became apparent that the water supply at this location was not sufficient for the mills. It was then moved back to its old location near the Nepomuk Bridge and then to its current location at the beginning of the 18th century. The current watermill building was converted for modern purposes and is used for offices.

A sign is dedicated to the Bremen Town Musicians on the old watermill in Vechta. A small bronze plaque is attached to the third crossbeam of the mill's half-timbered building with the inscription: "This is the historic place where the donkey decided to become a member of the Bremen Town Musicians."

The former half-timbered watermill has existed at this location since 1724. Originally the mill was operated with a medium-sized water wheel. In 1882 the Schumacher brothers bought the mill and switched the drive to turbines. The mill technology is no longer available.

Due to water protection, some serious landscaping measures were carried out between 2023 and April 2024. Some recent photos illustrate this. At the moment it doesn't look quite as nice as it did before.
