The last ibex was poached in Valais in 1809.
The Italian king Vittorio Emanuele II placed the last 60 stone animals under strict protection in Italy and banned their export. A poacher managed to smuggle three young animals across the border into Switzerland in 1906.
They had their first cubs in the Peter and Paul wildlife park in St.Gallen. In 1911, the first ibexes were reintroduced into the wild in Switzerland in the Weisstannental.
