Marburg, surrounded by a strong wall, then extended around the castle in a semicircle between four city gates.
For safety reasons, the calf gate was closed at the beginning of the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648) and only reopened in 1874.
In the area of the calf gate, large parts of the old city wall have been preserved on both sides to this day.
