Schon kurz nach dem Start merkten wir, warum der Heidschnuckenweg zu den schönsten Wanderwegen Deutschlands zählt. Der Pfad führte uns durch sanfte Hügel, lichten Kiefernwald und immer wieder hinaus auf offene Heideflächen. Besonders eindrucksvoll waren die weiten Ausblicke, wenn sich das violette Heidekraut bis zum Horizont erstreckte und von Wacholderbüschen durchbrochen wurde.
