Bauweg Trail in Saxon Switzerland National Park

Highlight • Trail

Wonderful hiking trail, 116 km through Saxon Switzerland.

Elbe Sandstone Mountains painter's path: nature, hiking and art

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg uniquely combines nature, hiking and art with its historical route. The origins of the circular hiking trail go back to the 18th century, when the Elbe Sandstone Mountains came into fashion as a wildly romantic travel destination. In 2006 the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Malerweg was reconstructed and re-signposted on the basis of historical travel guides and works of art. Since 2012, display boards with historical landscape art at the very places where it was created have conveyed a feeling for the art-historical importance of the region.

Schrammstein Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

Because the Schrammsteine are one of the highlights in Saxon Switzerland because of the great panoramic views, it can of course be overcrowded here in summer. In winter, however, comparatively few hikers go here and there are no traffic jams along the narrow paths. The view at dusk is highly recommended. The descent from the Schrammsteinen takes about half an hour, so you should arrive in Postelwitz before it gets dark.

Schrammsteine Ridge Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The ridge path can be imagined as a summit cross-section. It goes on well-secured paths and stairs on summit and through gorges. Thus, the ridge path combines a sense of adventure and great panoramic views along the Schrammsteine.

View from the Breite Kluft plateau

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Breite-Kluft-Aussicht is another breathtaking view on the edge of the Malerweg. The view can hardly be missed and is right on the Malerweg. The area offers an ideal place to take a break and soak up the sun. Especially in the afternoon, the low winter sun lets the surroundings appear in a beautiful light. If you stay that long, you should of course feel comfortable hiking in the twilight and have a flashlight with you, especially for the descent to the Schrammstein.

Wild hell

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

I can highly recommend the “Wild Hell”. It is surprising that there is no sign at the beginning of the gorge about the difficulty. Without appropriate footwear, nothing can be done here and for those who are inexperienced, it is quite an experience. By the way – more up than down!!!

The Schrammsteintor is one of the most stunning rock formations in the entire national park. Towering towering the rocks on both sides above you. Climbers love the steep walls and in good weather you can see them high up and on top of the Schrammsteine.
