Observation Tower at Schapenbruchteich, Riddagshausen Nature Reserve

Highlight • Viewpoint

The observation tower in Riddagshausen, which burned down in 2011, was rebuilt on behalf of BUND and NABU with the support of the city of Braunschweig. The tower was inaugurated in March 2013. From the viewing platform you have a fabulous view of the Riddagshausen nature reserve with its numerous lakes.

The ten-hectare central pond is the second largest managed fish pond in the Riddagshausen nature reserve. The young fish are introduced in the spring when the pond is filled with water from the Weddeler Graben. These include carp, pike, zander, eel and rudd. They manage without additional feeding and are sold as food fish in autumn. In November the communication pond will be drained.

Wiedig Pond

Highlight • Lake

In spring, carp, tench and crucian carp are planted in the one-hectare Wiedig pond and removed again after two years. The Wiedig pond is filled in spring and drained in autumn. In the meantime, the fish spend the winter at Fischgut Riddagshausen.

With a size of twelve hectares, the Kreuzteich is the second largest pond in the Riddgagshäuser nature reserve after the Scharpenbruchteich. It is the habitat of numerous waterfowl, amphibians and insects. The fish pond is part of the pond system that was laid out 900 years ago around the Riddagshausen monastery. The Kreuzteich is probably Braunschweig's most popular ice skating surface when it's frozen over.

One of the many ponds in the Riddagshausen nature reserve. Despite the protection status, this area can be entered and is accessed through many beautiful paths. A wonderful local recreation area for the city of Braunschweig
