Big walk out with the hound. Tried a new track from Shiremoor to Backworth, a no go. Stuck to tried and tested tracks thereafter. Splendid day out, no rain and not one but two refreshment stops for approved sports nutrition, namely the Delaval Arms and the mighty LLR. Stopped at New Hartley to walk through the beautifully maintained Memorial Garden for the Hester Pit Disaster. 204 men and boys killed after the main beam fell down the single shaft. Brought about a change in the law to ensure a secondary shaft for emergencies, two of my family tree commemorated there, one was 11 years old.
