After Ham Hill today we went to visit some old friends who have retired to live in nearby South Petherton. And since we were there it was an ideal opportunity to visit St Martin's Church in also nearby Kingsbury Episcopi. Like many folk I'm fascinated by places with unusual names, and an Episcopi is pretty special isn't it? St Martin's was gorgeous!

Kingsbury ("Cyninges-burh"): Derived from Old English, meaning "King's Manor" or "King's Fortified Settlement". In Anglo-Saxon times, before the Norman Conquest, the estate originally belonged to the Saxon crown (traditionally associated with King Ine of Wessex in the early 8th century). It served as the central meeting place and administrative hub for the local ancient administrative area known as the Hundred of Kingsbury.

Prior to the Norman Conquest of 1066, the manor was granted by the Anglo-Saxon monarchy to the Bishop of Bath and Wells (or the Cathedral Church of Wells).

The affix Episcopi was attached to clarify ecclesiastical ownership, signifying that the land and manor were the personal property of the Bishop of Bath and Wells rather than belonging to the crown or the nearby Benedictine abbey at Muchelney.
