Kelitsadi Lake is a high-altitude lake in Georgia’s Kazbegi Municipality, on the Keli volcanic plateau at about 3,081 m above sea level. It is a remote mountain lake reached on foot, usually via Truso Valley, and it is frozen for much of the year, thawing mainly in summer.
Key facts
Location: Keli Highland / Keli volcanic plateau, Kazbegi Municipality.
Elevation: about 3,081 m.
Access: hiking only; the common route starts from Truso Valley.
Season: ice and snow cover it in winter and spring; it typically melts in June and is fully open by August–September.
Notable nearby peaks: Sherkhota / Serkhota and Khorisari.
Why it’s notable
The lake is known for its volcanic setting, sparse colorful terrain, and very isolated alpine atmosphere. Sources also note that the White Aragvi (Tetri Aragvi) river begins from the lake.
Travel note
This is a serious multi-day trek rather than a casual hike: routes can be long, water is scarce, and conditions change quickly at high altitude. If you want, I can also give you a map-oriented route description, a Georgian/Russian transliteration guide, or a short historical-geographical note on the Keli plateau.
Sherkhota is a volcanic mountain in Georgia’s Kazbegi region, rising to about 3,700 m. It lies near Kelitsadi Lake on the Keli Plateau and is often approached from the same trekking route. The mountain is known for its remote high-alpine setting, wide views, and red volcanic scree, making it an appealing but exposed hike in good weather.
